Moebius (Jean Giraud)

Jean Henri Gaston Giraud was a French artist, cartoonist, and writer who worked in the Franco-Belgian bandes dessinées tradition. He has created a wide range of science-fiction and fantasy comics in a highly imaginative, surreal, almost abstract style. However, he has also worked on animated and live-action movies such as: 1981's Heavy Metal, 1982's Time Masters, 1989's Little Nemo, 1991's White Nightmare, etc. The gallery below showcases a range of his work in comics and movies.

Similar to Mandy Wyckens, I really like how Moebius creates these abstract environments, it show me  the importance of environments in movies and comics. It is almost as if the environment is a character itself because of the amount of detail in them. In my opinion, I believe Moebius' environments are better than Wyckens'. Although Wyckens does use a range of colour pallets and considers composition to give her environments atmosphere and personality, I feel as though Moebius' work has a 'grander' atmosphere, I think this is because of the scale he makes his work and the amount of hidden detail in his work, it gives us a taste and better understand of the world he is trying to portray to us. Line work is also another technique that Moebius uses to his advantage, unlike Alphonse Mucha who uses thick bold lines to contour his figures, Moebius uses fine lines to create detail and texture on every object and person in his piece. Overall, I really enjoyed looking at Moebius' work for this week, seeing his work portrayed in comics, animation and live action movies was really interesting, it gave me different perspectives of his art in different styles. My favourite work from Moebius was 1981's Heavy Metal, the rotoscope animation makes the dark, apocalyptic setting seem more visually realistic.
