Zoetrope

What Is A Zoetrope ?

A zoetrope is a device that creates animation through the illusion of motion from static pictures. You see that the images you place in the zoetrope are motionless, still images. However, when the zoetrope is spun, the images create a moving sequence.

Before going into this lesson, I didn't have a great understand of zoetrope animation, however I really enjoyed creating one. For my zoetrope I decided to create a rabbit running cycle, I chose this because I was inspired by the homepage of experimental animation, as shown below. I'm glad I chose to to create a rabbit running cycle, I have never animated an animal's walk/run cycle so it was good to experiment and have a better understanding of the movements.

The video below shows my zoetrope that I created in class, I really like how it turned out, the running cycle is smooth and the line work is bold enough to make the rabbit stand out. If I could go back and change anything about my zoetrope, I would have made another version with the rabbit's body being completely black, giving it a silhouette.
