Milt Kahl

Milton Erwin Kahl was an American animator. He was one of Walt Disney's supervisory team of animators, known as Disney's Nine Old Men. The Nine Old Men were Walt Disney's core animators, some of whom later became directors, they created some of Disney's most famous animated cartoons, from 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs onward to 1977's The Rescuers. They even refined the 12 basic principles of animation :Squash and stretch, Anticipation, Staging, Straight Ahead Action and Pose to Pose, Follow Through and Overlapping Action ,Slow In and Slow Out, Arcs, Secondary Action, Timing, Exaggeration, Solid Drawing and Appeal- this shows their influence on animation as these principles are still used by animators today.

The reason I chose to research Kahl out of all the other animators was because of my own personal biased, he animated a lot on 1969's The Jungle Book, one of my favourite animated movies. Of course, this isn't the only film Kahl had worked on, over the years, Milt contributed to such Disney features as Melody Time, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, One Hundred and One Dalmatians and The Rescuers, among others. After nearly 40 years with Disney, Milt retired from the Studio in 1976. Kahl would sometimes put his signature 'head swaggle' on the characters in these feature movies, the head swaggle is when a character sort of rattles his/her head from side to side, usually at times when they're feeling cocky or self-assured, it's almost as if these characters are actors on stage, projecting themselves a bit too much in their performance. The video below shows a compilation of Kahl's 'head swaggles'.
