Jean-Michel Basquiat
For our 8th week of drawing practise, we were taught about American artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat, an artist I had never heard of prior to out lesson. Basquiat produced art through out the neo-expressionism movement of art and would sometimes tend to work in a graffiti or street art style. Neo-expressionism is a style of late modernist or early-postmodern painting and sculpture that emerged in the late 1970s, similar to the expressionism movement of art, it is characterized by intense subjectivity and rough handling of materials to express the artist's inner feelings. The gallery below showcases some of the art produced through out the neo-expressionism movement, excluding Basquiat's work because I will showcase his work independently.
Just like the expressionism era, I really like a lot of the work from the neo-expressionism period, I find it interesting having to analyse these colourful, abstract paintings to get an understanding of what the artists' feelings or ideas were during the paintings' creation process. The gallery below showcases some of Jean- Michel Basquiat's art work during this period.
Basquiat used his art to express his taste of cultural blending and hatred of racism, making his work sometimes look abstracted and aguish.
